Chiefs’ defensive frailties come to head to spoil campaign

By Madyira Michael

Kaizer Chiefs were again found wanting at the back to allow Marumo Gallants steal a point from them following Saturday’s 1-1 Premier Soccer League draw at FNB Stadium.

Some lethargic defending by Edmilson Dove saw him being dispossessed by Ranga Chivaviro who pounced to cancel Ashley du Prez’s early opener for the Soweto giants.

Chefs had started the contest very well but they were let down by their defence once again.

As a result, a  four-match winning run in the league came to a grinding halt and they will now have to play catch-up with their closest top-two challengers Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United.

It has been the story of Amakhosi this season witnessing their defence spoil their games.

This time around, the mistake by Dove came at a crucial moment of the season and that saw them drop two points in the race for the top-two.

Now placed fourth on the table, Chiefs are two points behind Pirates and SuperSport who are in position two and three respectively.

Coach Arthur Zwane’s post-match remarks suggest players did not follow his instructions and the result was Dove’s error.

“We go and concede a goal like that and I just told them, ‘stop playing the ball there,’” said Zwane on SuperSport TV.

“‘It’s too sloppy, make sure you play the ball wide quickly so that you come out of the tight situation, because they are pressing with two strikers there, as soon as we bypass those two strikers we have enough space to operate or to exploit.’”

It was the third time for Dove to commit such costly errors, having been villain in matches against Sekhuklhune United and AmaZulu in January.

Zwane also slammed his players for failing to take advantage of seemingly tired Gallants who have been enduring a hectic schedule of balancing domestic and Caf Confederation Cup duties.

Bahlabani ba Ntwa have been travelling around the continent as well as making trips from Limpopo to Bloemfontein where they have been playing their home games.
