The Ghanaian federation announced on Monday that Carlos Queiroz is the new head coach of Ghana.
The veteran Portuguese coach will lead the Black Stars at the 2026 World Cup.
Queiroz takes over from Otto Addo. The federation fired Addo two weeks ago. This happened just hours after Germany beat Ghana 2-1 in a friendly match.
The 73-year-old takes charge of his ninth national team. His long list of national teams includes South Africa, the UAE, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman.
This will be his fourth trip to the World Cup. He previously took Portugal to the tournament in 2010. He also guided Iran to the World Cup in 2018 and 2022.
During his club career, Queiroz managed Real Madrid. He also spent two periods as Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United.
“Coach Queiroz is starting his work immediately in order to prepare the Black Stars for the tournament, which kicks off on 11 June,” the federation said.
The federation did not say if his contract will last beyond the World Cup.
Ghana are in Group L for the tournament. They will play against England, Croatia and Panama this summer.
The United States, Canada and Mexico are co-hosting the World Cup.
