Captain Ronwen Williams backs Lyle Foster after coach calls him lazy

  • Coach Hugo Broos called Lyle Foster lazy after the striker missed big chances during the draw against Panama on Friday.
  • Ronwen Williams says fans should be patient because the striker is working hard while his English club struggles for results.

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has called for fans to back Lyle Foster. The 34-year-old goalkeeper is standing by the striker after a hard week with the national team.

Coach Hugo Broos was unhappy with Foster after a 1-1 draw against Panama on Friday. The coach called the striker’s performance lazy after he missed two good chances to win the game.

Williams does not agree with the coach. He says people must understand the pressure Foster is under. Foster plays for Burnley in England, but his team is at the bottom of the league.

The striker also missed the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) last year to look after his mental health. While he has scored since his return, he is struggling to find the net now.

Williams says Foster is a tough player who has what it takes to play at the highest level. The captain said he is watching the young star closely to help him, News24 reported.

Williams said: “Lyle is a big boy. You don’t play in the English Premiership for so many years if you don’t have quality.”

The captain said Foster still works hard for the team even when he is not scoring. He believes the striker just needs one goal to get his confidence back.

Williams praised Foster for showing up every day with a professional attitude. He told the country to support Foster in both good and bad times.

Bafana Bafana will play Panama again on Tuesday night at the Cape Town Stadium. The match is sold out and fans want to see Foster score. The game starts at 19:30.
