- Capitec is giving new device buyers 60GB of free data worth R1,200, loaded as 5GB monthly bundles over 12 months.
- The bank sells smartphones through its app, with 17 devices available ranging from budget Samsung models to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Capitec is giving free data to customers who buy a new device through its banking app, starting March 2026.
New device buyers receive 5GB of data every month for 12 months. That adds up to 60GB of free data, valued at R1,200. The bundle is valid for 30 days and loads automatically each month.
Capitec says this is part of its plan to grow Capitec Connect, its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). The network launched in September 2022 and runs on Cell C. It offers prepaid voice, data and SMS bundles that do not expire.
By 31 August 2025, Capitec Connect had 1.1 million active clients. In the six months to that date, customers used 311 million call minutes, a 22% increase on the previous year, and nearly 15 million gigabytes of data.
Since October 2025, customers can buy smartphones directly through the Capitec banking app. The bank currently offers 17 devices, from the Samsung Galaxy A05 and A06 to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, bundled with the Galaxy Watch 8, for R42,999. Apple iPhones are also available.
The bank promises delivery within three days. To order a device, customers must first collect a SIM card from a Capitec branch. The bank said it may expand its device range depending on customer demand.
Capitec has also introduced advances to help customers buy smartphones. It is preparing to launch eSIM support. Capitec Connect head Dr Dalene Steyn previously said the bank had been testing eSIMs and planned to roll them out once more customers’ phones were ready for the technology.
Editor’s note: This article has been updated following a correction from Capitec. An earlier version stated that the free data offer applied to all customers who link their Capitec Connect number to their bank account. Capitec has confirmed the offer is only available to customers who purchase a new device through the Capitec app.
