Firefighters at Mfuleni Fire Station in Cape Town helped deliver their third healthy baby in just two months on Friday.
The expectant mother arrived at the fire station and 20 minutes later she was cradling a healthy baby boy with the help of the firefighters on duty.
This follows two other successful deliveries at the station in December – a baby boy on 1 December and a baby girl on 12 December.
JP Smith, the City’s MCM for Safety and Security, praised the firefighters.
“Mfuleni Fire Station is a go-to for many residents in distress, and so it is wonderful to see how staff excel time and again to save lives, but also help bring new life into the world,” said Smith.
“It is a moment to be proud of and to cherish; our best wishes to the mother and her newborn. We are grateful that there were no complications and that everything went well.”
The mother and baby were taken to Khayelitsha Day Hospital by ambulance.
Resident Nolizwe Ngwane, 45, said she didn’t believe firefighters helped pregnant women until she read about it.
“During December, I heard that they assisted two women; I thought it was township gossip until I read the story on the news,” said Ngwane.
“I only thought that we could call them when there is a fire in our communities, but now I know that when I get pregnant, I will visit the firefighters’ department because it is close and they are doing a great job.”
