Western Cape SAPS are trying to trace a taxi driver as part of an investigation into a rape, kidnapping and attempted murder case, which started in the driver’s vehicle.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, said the Kraaifontein Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit needs the public to help them trace the suspect.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that on Saturday, the victim was travelling by taxi to Bloekombos,” said Swartbooi.
“On the way, the driver drove in the direction of Bottelary Road where he assaulted the victim, raped her, and left her naked in the bushes.”
The victim later managed to walk to a nearby restaurant where personnel assisted her with transport to Kraaifontein SAPS, where she reported her ordeal.
Mawethu Sila, Bloewata Taxi Association spokesperson, said the victim came to report at the taxi rank.
“We asked her for more information on the incident before calling the suspect,” said Sila.
“After getting all the information, we called the police so that they can continue with the investigation. We don’t know what happened after that.”
He said the safety of the passengers depends on the drivers.
“It is disappointing that passengers don’t feel safe because of what some members are doing,” he said.
Sila urged the passengers to always take the last numbers of the registration on the taxi’s licence plate.
“It is then easy for us to identify the owner of the taxi in cases like these or any other complaints involving our drivers or members,” he said.
