One of South Africa’s flag bearers in Hollywood, Gqom musician Busisiwe Gqulu, has praised the power of social media, saying it has profiled many African artists’ work.
Busisiwe’s work alongside fellows like Young Stunna, Kamo Mphela, Sino Msolo, DBN Gogo features prominently on the critically acclaimed film Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever.
Their contribution can be heard on songs “Love and Loyalty (Believe)” and “Jele”.
“This is a huge project. It’s fantastic that local artists get recognised like this,” the Eastern Cape artist said of the mega-hit Marvel film.
“I believe it is largely due to the power of social media that one’s work has been able to go far. Featuring in such a big film will enhance my profile and I intend to keep working hard to represent SA in style.”
Wakanda Forever is the sequel to Black Panther, Marvel’s first superhero movie with a predominantly black cast, which included Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and the late great Chadwick Boseman.
Like the first film, Wakanda Forever’s soundtrack is a celebration of black music genres, with over 40 international artists whose contribution was recorded in Lagos, Nigeria, Mexico City, London and Los Angeles.
The soundtrack opens with its most powerful statement: a return to music by billionaire cosmetics entrepreneur and Grammy award winner, Rihanna.
Other artists include Tems, Burna Boy, Fireboy DML and E-40.
