The IFP Mayor who brought his party into disrepute for allegedly spending R5 million on a business breakfast in Durban is facing a future of obscurity as a backbencher in parliament.
Zululand Mayor Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi won’t return to his mayoral position to quell the tension that rose during the election campaign against him, Scrolla.Africa has learned.
“The party does not want to be in trouble because there are a lot of corruption accusations against him including the forensic report from the Mdledle Attorneys which was Commissioned by the Cogta,” a source said.
“That report revealed a lot of things which the IFP does not want to be associated with. That is why the party wants to deploy him to the national Parliament to fill the vacant seat of the late Mthokozisi Nxumalo who died in a car accident some few months ago.”
IFP president Velenkosini Hlabisa refused to comment on the Cogta report but revealed that the IFP is taking a serious stance on its mayors and councillors with links to corruption.
“All we want to do is to deal decisively with those who will be lazy and fail to work for the people,” said Hlabisa.
He also revealed that all their representatives will be asked to sign a pledge to be loyal to the communities they serve.
Prince Mtuntukaphuwana Zulu has apparently been tipped to replace Reverend Buthelezi, but refused to comment on the matter.
