Cleaners were busy working along Ngqwangi Road in Lower Crossroads, Philippi East in Cape Town when they discovered the burnt body of a baby at an informal dump site.
One of the cleaners said she was shocked when one of her colleagues screamed and called them over.
“At first, we thought she had seen a snake. It never crossed my mind that it was a baby. We rushed there and saw a burnt body. I was so hurt.”
“Whoever is responsible,” the cleaner added, “did the most evil thing on Earth because the child was innocent.”
The cleaners said community members staying next to the dump mentioned a woman who came to dump rubbish and burnt it.
“The residents were confused and wondered why she was burning the rubbish because people just go there to dump. She was seen burning rubbish, and now it is clear that she must be the baby’s mother,” the cleaner said, adding that the baby looked about two months old.
“I don’t think the woman comes from this area because even residents who saw her didn’t recognise her. It is clear she’s not from here,” said the cleaner.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, said the Philippi East police registered a concealment of birth case after the partially decomposed body of the baby was found.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation but no arrests have been made,” said Twigg.
