While most people are enjoying the new year, the Mthethwa family is mourning the horror death of Busisiwe Mthethwa, 56, who was strangled and chopped into pieces.
Her body parts were stuffed into a freezer.
Akhona Sirhamza, a family member, said they heard the news from Mthethwa’s tenants.
“We received a call on Saturday around 19:00 after her boyfriend was seen selling her house belongings,” said Akhona.
They rushed to her house, and when they arrived, the 35-year-old boyfriend was not there.
“We went to the police station to ask that they accompany us back to her house so that they could break the burglar bars for us to gain entrance.”
When they arrived with SAPS members, the boyfriend also arrived, carrying a plastic bag with chicken meat.
“He told us that Busisiwe was in Blackheath. He asked us to leave so that he could cook his chicken in peace,” said Akhona.
They insisted on checking the freezer before leaving.
“We knew he was lying because the tenants told us that she was around. The deep freezer was opened, and her body parts were inside.”
The couple had been dating for three years. The suspect “has been abusing her, and just before she was murdered, she was ready to leave him,” said Akhona.
“We suspect that her ‘Ben 10’ boyfriend didn’t want to be dumped. He couldn’t accept it because the victim was doing everything for him.”
The suspect, who has been arrested, is from Zimbabwe, and the family said they suspect that if he gets bail he will go back to Zimbabwe and resume a normal life. “He must rot in jail,” said Akhona.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said a male has been arrested in connection with the murder and will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.
“Samora Machel SAPS are investigating a murder case after the body of a 56-year-old woman was discovered in a freezer. The circumstances surrounding the incident are subject to a police investigation,” said Twigg.
