- Brown Mogotsi admitted during a parliamentary committee meeting that he killed a man during a physical fight years ago.
- He said the man fell, later died, and prosecutors withdrew the murder charge before the case formally went to trial.
A man who died after a fight with Brown Mogotsi became the focus of a tense moment in Parliament this week.
Mogotsi told an ad hoc committee that he killed the man during a physical altercation. He said the death was not intentional.
The exchange happened when uMkhonto weSizwe party member of Parliament Vusi Shongwe questioned him about past cases under his name. Mogotsi confirmed that several cases, including reckless driving, were withdrawn over the years.
Shongwe then asked if he had faced a murder charge. Mogotsi replied: “Yes, that’s correct.”
He told the committee that he and the man fought. He said the man fell during the fight and later died. Mogotsi said he took the injured man to a clinic.
He confirmed that police charged him and that the matter went to court. He appeared while out on bail.
Before the case could go to trial, prosecutors withdrew it. Mogotsi said he did not know the exact reason for the withdrawal.
He said there were no witnesses and that the state could not prove its case. He said the only witness had died after being ill.
Mogotsi confirmed that he never entered a plea in court.
Shongwe questioned how a case of that nature could collapse if Mogotsi admitted he was involved in the fight that led to the man’s death. Members of the committee raised concerns about credibility and accountability.
