Hugo Broos, the 71-year-old coach of Bafana Bafana, shared the challenges he faced since taking charge of the South African national football team in May 2021.
Despite nearly leading the team to the playoffs of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers, Broos received harsh criticism, especially regarding his squad selections.
The team’s heavy 5-0 defeat by France and a 2-1 loss in the Afcon qualifiers against Morocco pushed Broos to think about quitting the job.
He felt frustrated by the direction things were going and doubted his impact.
Yet, Broos’s determination to be a “winner” kept him going. His resolve was strengthened by South Africa’s performance in the recent Afcon and a victory over Morocco.
Looking back on the tough times, Broos said: “After France 5-0 and Morocco 2-1, I was thinking about quitting, this was too much.”
Despite considering leaving, a louder voice within him insisted, “No, go on, go on. Believe in what you believe in and it will happen.”
This internal struggle was an important moment for Broos, who had even discussed potential future projects with his then-assistant Cedomir Janevski during a break, FarPost reported.
