Health Minister Zweli Mkhize was suspended last week amid allegations of corruption but if you think that’s depressing, thank your lucky stars you’re not in the UK.
The country’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, called his own health minister, Matt Hancock, “totally f*cking hopeless” in a text which came to light on Wednesday afternoon.
The text was sent at the start of the Covid pandemic, and the health minister, Matt Hancock, has remained in charge of Covid policy since then.
The text was published by Johnson’s own former right hand man, Dominic Cummings.
Cummings was once described by many publications as the second most powerful man in the UK. Now, he spends his time launching scathing attacks on Johnson and his government for their terrible track record at fighting the pandemic. It is part of an ongoing tirade attacking Johnson’s “chronic dysfunction.” This goes some way to showing the state of current UK politics.
In the leaked text, Cummings wrote to Johnson on 26 March last year about Hancock, saying that his plans for testing were in chaos.
Johnson writes back: “Totally fucking hopeless.”
According to Cummings, Johnson repeated his view of Hancock to him several occasions, including in texts where he openly considered sacking the health minister.
Asked by broadcasters on Wednesday if he thought he was “hopeless,” Hancock said, “I don’t think so.”
Cummings’s attack on Johnson and Hancock comes less than a month after the former aide described the Prime Minister as “terrifyingly sh*t” at dealing with the pandemic.
