Born for glory – destined for doom

By Celani Sikhakhane

From birth; every decision made about Amampondo princess Wezizwe Sigcau was informed by the theory that one day she will lead her people.

The reigning king of the Zulu nation could not marry her because her father said she’d succeed him as ruler of Amampondo people of Mbizana in the Eastern Cape.

Princess Wezizwe is the mother of Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s first born son Prince Jubezizweni.

Her first love is now ruling the 15 million strong Zulu nation without her.

And new squabbles over the Amampondo Kingship could now mean she might never be queen.

Since the death of her father King Mpondombini Sigcau who is the brother to Princess Stella Sgcau – her uncle King Zanozuko Sigcau took over power until his death last year.

Last year she won an important victory after the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein ruled against King Zanozuko Sigcau being succeeded by his son.

But Prince Mbasa Sigcau told Scrolla.Africa that the judgment didn’t say Princess Wezizwe must ascend the throne but it referred the matter back to the family.

“Princess Wezizwe is not from the great house. Their grandfather Botha Sigcau’s Kingship was a result of colonialism who dethroned the rightful King Nelson in 1944.

“Another issue is that the late King Zanozuko had no wife and eligible children to take over the throne. That is why Dumelani Sigcau is the acting king and not a regent,” said Prince Mbasa.

He said the family was still busy with the matter through their customary processes.

One faction in the family is mounting a strong claim to the throne under the leadership of Inkosi Nxili Sigcau.

A third faction wants the late King Zanozuko’s son to take over the throne.
