  • Eskom says lower costs, better sales and government help made the turnaround possible after years of losses and load-shedding.

Eskom CEO Dan Marokane has taken home R14-million after leading the power company to its first profit in eight years.

The state-owned utility made R16.05-billion in profit for the year ending 31 March 2025. That’s a huge change from the R55.02-billion loss it made the year before.

Eskom said it earned more money and spent less. Electricity sales went up by 3.5%, energy costs dropped by 14%, and the company received a 12.74% price increase. It also got a R9.2-billion fuel rebate from the tax office.

The government’s debt relief plan also gave Eskom a big boost. Through the Eskom Debt Relief Act, the National Treasury gave the company R254-billion over three years to help pay off its massive debt. In 2025, Eskom received R64-billion, which allowed it to invest in its power system.

When Marokane became CEO in March 2024, Eskom owed nearly R396.3-billion. South Africa had also suffered 205 days of load-shedding the year before.

Since then, the company has managed to reduce power cuts and improve its finances. The Eskom board praised Marokane for his leadership and rewarded him with a R14-million salary package.
