At the recent New York Climate Week Summit, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa MaDube Ncube urged corporations to take responsibility following the destructive floods that caused widespread damage in the province.
Recalling the devastation caused by the 2022 floods in KZN, MaDube Ncube highlighted the role of the corporate sector as significant polluters contributing to climate change.
She voiced concerns over rising sea levels causing deadly damage in KZN and the Western Cape.
“Governments must strengthen implementation of current policies and strategies to hold corporations responsible for their contribution to the impacts of climate change and to ensure their accountability.
“The corporations on the other hand must put their money where their values are. We urgently need collective action to mitigate, while we largely adapt to the impacts of climate change,” said MaDube Ncube.
During her visit, the premier also engaged with California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom.
Their discussions revolved around shared lessons on climate insurance and establishing mutual learning platforms for both KwaZulu-Natal and California’s subnational governments.
The importance of immediate action was emphasised, given the shared vulnerabilities of both regions to flash floods, droughts, and rising sea levels.
