The family of Big Brother Mzansi Umlilo Season Five winner Akhonamathemba Mbhele, known as Sweet Guluva, wants to stay out of the spotlight despite his new celebrity status and R2 million prize.

Speaking to Scrolla.Africa from their home in the small town of Nquthu in northern KZN, his mother MaZwane Mbhele said they are a private family and are not ready to speak to the media.

“We don’t even know when he’s coming back home and we won’t publicly share any plans about his homecoming. You can only speak to his managers about anything that has to do with him,” said MaZwane.

Despite their silence, hundreds of fans gathered outside the Mbhele home on Sunday night to celebrate Sweet Guluva’s win.

Some spun cars in celebration while others screamed with joy, saying the vibe reminded them of the wild scenes in 2009 after a rumour spread that Maskandi star Mgqumeni Mseleku had risen from the dead.

The entire town of Nquthu came to a standstill until the early hours of Monday.

Sweet Guluva was an unknown school soccer player and part-time barber before his time in the Big Brother house.

He won the hearts of South Africans and beat housemate Uyanda Hlangabezo from Gqeberha to take the top prize.

He shot to fame through his down-to-earth nature and fun personality, with many saying he represented the spirit of ordinary South Africans.
