Innocent bystander, Nobuhle Zitha was walking home from work during the recent community wars in Phoenix, KZN when she was attacked – but she was spared and has shared her near-death experience with Scrolla.Africa.
While many are reported to have been murdered, Nobuhle narrowly escaped death when an all-male mob in Phoenix, near KwaMashu and Inanda townships allegedly beat her up leaving her with a broken jaw.
It’s been two weeks since the 24-year-old Inanda woman was attacked in the Phoenix Massacre, where Indian and Black residents have been fighting, leading to loss of life.
“I was coming back from work when a group of men attacked me,” she said.
“I tried to tell them that I was coming home from work.”
By the time one of the men ordered the beating to end, Nobuhle was in great pain. She was struggling to walk and bleeding, but she managed to limp the seven kilometres home.
“My body was covered in blood. I have been trying to move around, but I’m unable to move. My body aches,” said Nobuhle.
Since the gruesome attack, Nobuhle has been bedridden, and says she has yet to get to the police station to open a case.
The number of people who have died in Phoenix remains unclear.
The government said more than 128 people have died while Muzi Hlengwa, an undertaker from Durban, counted the deaths to be more than 300.
More than 20 people have been arrested following the spate of killings in Phoenix.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has promised more arrests in connection with the killings.
