Battle Royale: Feud erupts over Zulu Regiments top job

By Celani Sikhakhane

In the heart of KwaZulu-Natal, a fierce feud has erupted among prominent traditional leaders over the position of Zulu Regiments commander.

This hotly contested role became vacant after the passing of induna Mgilija Nhleko last year, leaving the contenders locked in a power struggle of epic proportions.

The candidates in contention are Masefa Mhlongo from Ulundi and Zakheleni Xulu, the current commander of the regiments of Obuka in Melmoth.

According to a source, iNkosi Thanduyise Mzimela of the Ingonyama Trust Board and iNkosi Thokozani Mathaba of Macambini each back a different candidate.

“The fight between Mzimela and Mathaba is serious because they want to have control of the regiments. That is why they are at loggerheads over who should replace the late Mgilija Nhleko.

“Mathaba is supporting Zakheleni Xulu who is part of the traditional leaders who are in support of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi. iNkosi Mzimela is in support of Masefa Mhlongo who is team King Misuzulu,” the source said.

Mathaba stated that he was not invited to a meeting in Ulundi to discuss the matter and believes that the king has the authority to appoint the commander of the regiments.

The position of the Zulu Regiments commander has been vacant since Mgilija Nhleko was removed in 2021 after being accused of disrespecting King Misuzulu kaZwelithini. He subsequently apologised but passed away a few months later.

Mzimela was not reachable for comment, and Prince Afrika Zulu, spokesperson for King Misuzulu, said he will discuss the matter with the king and provide an update.

As of now, neither Masefa Mhlongo nor Zakheleni Xulu has provided comment on the situation.

The role of the Zulu Regiments commander involves leading the regiments and giving them instructions as they accompany the king to official events and ceremonies. Historically, commanders played a significant role in protecting the nation and deploying regiments during wars.
