A man arrested for being in possession of a suspected hijacked bakkie shot and killed himself inside a metro police van outside the Kempton Park police station on Tuesday morning.
Ekurhuleni metro police officers stopped an NP300 Nissan which had been reported stolen after it had been hijacked in the Kempton Park policing area.
The driver was arrested and placed in the police van but when the vehicle came to the remote-controlled gate at the police station, the suspect shot himself. He died in the van, according to a source at the scene.
The source told Scrolla.Africa he was amazed that the suspect was arrested without being thoroughly searched.
Ekurhuleni metro police spokesperson Thabiso Makgato confirmed that a 32-year-old male killed himself outside the Kempton Park police station.
“The Independent Police Investigative Directorate was called and took over the scene. Investigations are still in the preliminary phase and is sub judice,” she said.
