Arrested ANC eThekwini leader gets bail

Bongumusa (Musa) Nciki, the regional secretary of the ANC in the eThekwini region, has been granted R5,000 bail after spending a night in a police holding cell.

Nciki was arrested on Wednesday night for reckless driving as he was leaving 14 on Chartwell – a popular and busy square in Umhlanga, north of Durban – with his heavily armed bodyguard.

He was later moved to the holding cells of the Durban North SAPS where he was detained overnight.

On Thursday, he appeared in court with his bodyguard Ivan Khoza.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in KwaZulu-Natal, Natasha Kara, said Nciki and Khoza were arrested for reckless driving and for operating an unlicensed motor vehicle.

“[They] appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today on charges of reckless driving, alternatively, disregard for a road traffic signal [a red traffic light], and operating an unlicensed vehicle.

“The state is alleging that the men were driving along Lighthouse Road in Umhlanga on 6 March 2024, when they committed the offences,” Kara said.

The case was remanded to 10 April for further investigation.

Nciki was elected to the regional executive committee and regional top five in April 2022.

The ANC in KZN said it was unable to say anything about the matter because it was a legal issue and that it was still waiting for a report from the ANC in the eThekwini region.

The DA in the province said the arrest of Nciki and Khoza comes as no surprise to the party and concerned residents.
