While Mzansi is still battling with the scourge of abuse and murder directed at women, music streaming platform Apple Music is starting Women’s Month on a positive footing with a Visionary Women’s playlists campaign.
Twenty-five women within the entertainment space across the globe, including actresses, singers and media personalities from South Africa, shared their playlist of music from females who inspired their art through music.
Sharing a playlist of 26 songs with classics like Brenda Fassie’s “Weekend Special” and Lebo Mathosa’s “I Love Music”, R&B star Elaine, whose real name is Ndivhuwo Elaine Mukheli, said she loves and respects the women on her playlist.
“In celebration of Women’s Day, I have put together a playlist of women whom I not only grew up listening to; but young women in music, too, whom I love and respect,” said Elaine on Apple Music.
“Listening to their music makes me feel powerful, inspired, beautiful and reassures me that I am capable of achieving anything and everything.”
Former Miss Universe and Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi shared a playlist of 25 songs with a number of local artists like DJ Zinhle, Thandiswa Mazwai, Ami Faku and Amanda Black, to name a few. She defined what “visionary women” means for her.
“A visionary woman is a woman who is not scared to go where others have not yet. She understands the power of authenticity and possesses a bravery to go against the grain. She is not bound by the status quo and always navigates in her truth.
“My vision for the next generation of women is that they continue taking up space, especially in places where they have been told they do not belong. You belong and you have every right to be there,” added Tunzi, who continues to be an inspiring role model to young women across the globe.
Other women who were selected to push the campaign, which is expected to play for the whole month, include Sha Sha, Simmy, Loot-Love, Msaki and actress Natasha Thahane.
On Friday, 29 July Scrolla.Africa reported about a horrific ordeal of eight women who were allegedly gang raped during a music video shoot at an abandoned mine in Krugersdorp in Gauteng.
Twelve women and 10 men were allegedly robbed of their belongings and camera filming equipment, which has since been recovered during a sting operation on Friday in Krugersdorp.
