Six people have been shot dead in separate incidents in different parts of the Eastern Cape this weekend.
On Friday police were called to a scene to attend to a shooting incident at Motherwell’s NU29 section in Gqeberha. On arrival they found two people with gunshot wounds, one was already deceased while the other was still alive.
The second victim was taken to a local clinic and was declared dead on arrival.
Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu said the deceased were between 23 and 32 years old.
She added that while police were busy on the scene, they were informed of another shooting a few streets away.
“They were informed of another shooting in Mkholonjane Street, NU29. On arrival at the scene they found a deceased man with gunshot wounds,” Naidu said.
While the community of Motherwell was still reeling from the three murders that occurred on Friday, a fourth person was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“It is alleged residents heard several gunshots and later found the deceased, aged 35, in the street with multiple gunshot wounds,” Naidu added.
The names of the deceased have not yet been released.
Motherwell police are investigating four cases of murder.
Meanwhile in the rural town of Ngcobo two suspects were shot dead after a confrontation with the police.
Naidu said the National Intervention Unit (NIU) from Mthatha had been monitoring the two suspects who were involved in various criminal activities such as extortion, robbery and murder in both the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape.
Police were responding to a tip-off about the possession of unlicensed firearms.
“On arrival, suspects started shooting at the police who retaliated by firing back. During the retaliation, two suspects were fatally wounded,” Naidu said.
Both suspects were 29 years old.
