In a tale of sheer horror, a mother and her three-year-old daughter were run over by a speeding car. The little girl died instantly while the mother was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
Then, as if the family’s suffering was not enough, another speeding car ran over the body of the child that had not yet been collected by pathologists.
The incident happened on Saturday afternoon on the busy N1 in Musina, next to the Obed Mashaba Fire Station.
“The driver tried to flee the scene but was blocked and could not escape,” said a community member at the scene.
“In a fit of rage, the angry father of the child went to the garage and came back with petrol, which the people used to set the car on fire,” she said.
She said it happened in full view of the police.
Community leader Freedom Boikanyo said the area is an accident hotspot.
“For a long time we have tried to talk to the department of transport to build an overhead pedestrian bridge without success. How many people have to die here before they listen to us?” he said.
If a bridge is not built, the people will be left with no option but to put speed bumps on a national road, Boikanyo added.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the driver was arrested. He will be appearing at the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon.
The driver of the burnt car has not yet opened a case against the community.
