Tokyo Sexwale admits the ANC has issues but insists it is still going strong ahead of the upcoming elections on 29 May.
“Our people still believe in what the ANC can achieve with them and for them,” he said on Tuesday.
Sexwale joined other party veterans on a door-to-door campaign in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, to persuade voters to give the party another opportunity to lead.
Sexwale said the ANC vehicle still has wheels, and the party was working together to tighten the wheels. “As part of the process, we are going to have to be honest with ourselves.”
Introspection is needed, he said. The ANC must “look at the mistakes we made over the years. We are out here owning up to our shortcomings and mistakes we have made.
“As an equal member of the ANC, I will be part of those who will be assessing every aspect of political and economic life as it takes place in the country. There are many issues to point at, but after the elections, we will tackle all the key challenges in their totality.”
Commenting about the DA’s latest advertisement in which a South African flag linked to the EFF-ANC coalition is burning, Sexwale said: “The burning of the flag is tantamount to treason; there are laws governing this.
“Once you burn the flag, it shows you are no longer a patriot of this country. You are insulting the people who died fighting for the democracy of this country. A lot of blood was spilt in this country, represented by the red colour on the flag.
“Anybody who disrespects that flag is disrespecting our people,” he said.
DA leader John Steenhuisen said the burning of the South African flag in the advert demonstrates how the country will burn to ashes if the ANC and EFF go into a national coalition.
“They will burn our Constitution, burn the rand to ashes, burn private property rights to ashes and burn job creation to ashes,” he said.
