ANC sets out conditions for parties to join GNU

The ANC NEC has set out a list of conditions for political parties to join the government of national unity (GNU) to guide them and ensure coherence.

In a race to finalise the GNU, the ANC’s 87-member national executive committee (NEC), the party’s highest decision-making body between elective conferences, was locked in a meeting on Thursday to discuss premier candidates and coalitions.

The ANC has been forced to form a coalition government after its support dropped to 40% in the recent elections.

In his closing remarks after the NEC meeting, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa said the country requires extraordinary leadership with courage to plot a way forward.

“The modalities of national unity will take into account the conditions faced by the country, which include job creation, the high cost of living, service delivery, crime and corruption.

“Those interested in joining the government of national unity must commit to shared values, nation building and social cohesion.

“The values are based on respect for the Constitution, social justice and equity, human dignity, the rule of law and non-sexism.

“They should also be based on stability, integrity, accountability and transparency.”

Ramaphosa added that agreements between parties should be in writing and made public.

“Though various political parties have ideological differences, that should not rule them out from working together,” he said.

“It is clear from the election results that parties expect their party leaders to work together to meet their needs.”
