The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has made the staggering claim that the EFF is pretending to be its coalition partner while working with the DA to remove them in eThekwini.
The accusations were made on Thursday by provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo during a media address at ANC provincial headquarters at Seme House in Durban.
Mtolo said the EFF misled the public by blaming the ANC and “behaving like school kids” over eThekwini’s failure to spend a R1.2 billion municipal disaster infrastructure grant — while the unit involved is actually controlled by EFF councillor Themba Mvubu.
Mvubu chairs the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Services Committee. Mtolo said it is not their fault that the EFF deployed “an idiot” who doesn’t understand the unit he is leading.
“They are working with the DA to overthrow the ANC. They are being funded by one person who is from Israel,” he said.
Mvubu’s committee oversees human settlements, engineering, the eThekwini Transport Authority, water and sanitation, electricity, cleaning and solid waste. Thus, the party controls the biggest budget in the city — approximately R43.7 billion.
“The combined asset portfolio of these units is valued at more than R140 billion. If you
combine the staff complement of human settlements and the above units, you are
talking about more than 8,500 municipal workers all under the control of the EFF,” Mtolo added.
“It is not our fault they deployed an idiot who doesn’t understand how to govern a metropolitan municipality.”
EFF spokesperson Mazwi Blose defended Mvubu this week — claiming he has been fighting tooth and nail with officials over their failure to spend funds on services.
He said the officials deliberately failed to spend money, knowing very well it would end up being sent back to the National Treasury.
