  • Blue Screen Entertainment says the amapiano artist defamed its staff and owner after being paid in full for a gig.
  • The company is demanding an apology and threatening to sue for R1-million if she does not respond.

Popular amapiano artist Nontobeko Thandeka Ngema, better known as MaWhoo, is facing a defamation lawsuit over a voice note she reportedly sent after a recent performance.

According to Blue Screen Entertainment, the star accused the company’s owner and staff of being “scammers” shortly after performing at the Durban Music Festival on 3 May. The festival was headlined by American rapper Rick Ross.

In a legal letter dated 16 May, the company’s legal head, Brian Steel, said MaWhoo had been contracted to perform and was paid in full. But after the event, she allegedly sent a voice note to one of the organisers, calling the team scammers without giving any reason or proof.

Blue Screen claims this message has hurt the company’s reputation and could affect future business deals, Sunday World reported.

The company has sent a letter of demand to MaWhoo and her business, MaWhoo Entertainment, calling for a full apology—either in writing or via a voice note—by the end of Monday, 19 May.

If she does not respond, the company says it will take her to court and claim at least R1-million in damages.

“Your actions constitute a serious act of defamation under South African law,” the letter reads, warning that the company’s image has suffered as a result.
