Almost 5,000 murders and 10,000 rapes in first three months of the year

South Africa’s murder rate went up between January and March 2021, with almost 5,000 people killed.

Almost 10,000 people were raped during the same period.

Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the latest crime statistics, for January to March, on Friday.

The murder rate of 4,976 people was 387 deaths higher than it was across the same period last year.

Cele said the number also included 24 policemen killed in the first three months of this year.

There were 9,518 rape cases – 4% fewer than in the same period in 2020.

“The Eastern Cape’s Lusikisiki police station recorded the highest incidents of rape, overtaking the Inanda station, which has sadly held the number one position for some years,” Cele said.

The police minister commented: “The sexual violence meted against women in this country is simply shameful.”

As for farm attacks during the period, 11 people were killed, including four farmers or farm owners and two farm employees.

Non violent crime was down: property related crimes were 20,8% lower and stock theft 11,1% lower than in the same period last year.
