Alex FM is flying the flag high for Alexandra township after scoring 14 nominations at the 2025 National Community Awards.
The community radio station has been on air since 1994 and now reaches over 160,000 listeners across Gauteng and nearby areas. It broadcasts in eight languages, including English, IsiZulu, Xitsonga and Setswana.
Station manager Takalane Nemangowe said the nominations show that their work is making an impact.
“We are honoured to be recognised among the best in the community radio sector,” he said. “This is radio for the people. We listen to those who listen to us.”
He thanked the listeners and praised the entire Alex FM team for their commitment.
The nominated categories include best breakfast show, talk show host, current affairs host, sports presenter, gospel show and content producer.
Alex FM listener Maikie Mdlulu said the station helped her feel connected to her family while studying far from home.
“I left my mum and siblings to study in another province. Sometimes I felt like I didn’t belong,” she said.
“But Alex FM kept me informed about home. It’s more than just a radio station. If you need help, someone at the station will find a way to assist.”
Broadcaster Matibako Motimele congratulated his colleagues and thanked the station’s leadership.
“Your talent and passion shine through,” he said.
Nemangowe added that many of the station’s former presenters have gone on to work for regional and national broadcasters.
Despite suffering major losses during the 2022 looting, including stolen equipment and trophies, the station has bounced back stronger than ever.
“We are proud of this achievement,” said Nemangowe.
