Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau’s days at Al Ahly are numbered. Recently appointed Red Devils coach Ricardo Soares is said to have deemed Tau as surplus to requirement.
It is understood that Al Ahly management have already contacted Tau’s representative Mmatsatsi Sefalafala to advise him to explore other options.
According to the source close to the Egyptian giants, the management wants a better offer for the South African that will see them benefit as well.
“Al Ahly management wants to find an offer for the departure of Percy Tau as soon as possible. The club wants to benefit from the financial compensation should he find a new club,” said the source.
Tau joined the Red Devils in August 2021 on a two-year deal from the English outfit Brighton & Hove Albion after he was lured to join Al Ahly by his former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor Pitso Mosimane.
But after Mosimane resigned from his post in June 2022 Tau has seen little game time.
Last week he returned after an injury that had delayed his progress under Soares but he managed to make a comeback in time for the Egyptian Cup final against Zamalek five days ago.
Unfortunately his team lost 2-1 and now Soares has made his intentions clear that the Bafana man is not in his plans.
“Al Ahly is looking for a strong financial offer in order to compensate for the large amount that was paid when signing Percy from Brighton last summer,” said the source.
Tau’s agent will need to work as quickly as she can to find him a new home. Delays could see Tau being sidelined even further by Soares.
Limited game time could also see Tau missing out on Hugo Broos’s team that will take on Liberia in the back-to-back 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers in September.
