Africa’s first 270-degree screen is coming to NuMetro

By Razeen Gutta

In a first for the continent, NuMetro’s acquisition of the Gateway cinema in Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal, will feature Screen X — a 270-degree movie screen.

Formerly run by Ster-Kinekor, the popular Durban site has now been acquired by NuMetro and will reopen under its new branding in September.

The innovative technology known as Screen X has already successfully run in other countries.

It features multiple projectors in one auditorium to create a wraparound screen effect, extending the movie beyond the traditional frame and onto the side walls of the cinema.

Nu Metro is focusing on premium cinema experiences like Screen X, VIP cinemas, and 4DX theaters, to compete with Ster-Kinekor’s IMAX and Prestige; as well as CineCentre’s Supernova and Premieré theatre experiences in the current entertainment landscape.
