The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania has confirmed the passing of Mohamed El Mokhtar.
The promising goalkeeper for the nation’s under-21 team and also a player for AS Douanes suffered a concussion after a severe collision with a teammate during a training session.
The federation stressed El Mokhtar’s patriotism, talent, and exemplary character, mentioning his rapid rise within the ranks of goalkeepers to reach the national team at a young age.
The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) shared its condolences.
“[CAF] has learnt of the untimely passing of Mauritanian national team goalkeeper, Mohamed El Mokhtar. The 21-year-old goalkeeper sadly lost his life due to an unforeseen collision while at training, which resulted in head trauma that saw the young goalkeeper sadly passing.
“CAF president, Dr Patrice Motsepe, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Mohamed El Mokhtar’s family, club and the Mauritanian Football Federation. May the soul of Mohamed El Mokhtar rest in peace.”
The Mauritanian Cup final, which was to feature AS Douanes against Nouadhibou, has been postponed as a mark of respect for the young athlete’s passing.
