  • Advocate Dali Mpofu leaves the EFF for Zumaā€™s MK party, joining a trend of senior EFF members moving to MK.
  • Mpofu says MK is committed to black unity while Malema hints more EFF leaders may leave if they lack top positions.

Advocate Dali Mpofu, a well-known lawyer for former President Jacob Zuma, left Julius Malemaā€™s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to join Zumaā€™s MK party, only a month before the EFFā€™s big elective conference in December.

Mpofuā€™s move is the latest in a series of top EFF members leaving to join MK.

This trend started with former EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu, who was given a powerful role as national organiser in MK after he left the EFF.

Mpofu, also known as the “Peopleā€™s Advocate,” told the SABC that he believes MK is the only party truly working to unite black political groups.

“After a lot of soul-searching, Iā€™ve taken a decision that I will be joining MK. Iā€™m joining MK because I believe that it is the vehicle through which we will achieve the much-needed black and progressive unity,” he said.

Shivambu, who is now leading MKā€™s recruitment drive, says the party is attracting senior black professionals who see it as a good fit for them.

MK recently surprised many by winning 15% of the national vote and more than 45% in KwaZulu-Natal, Zumaā€™s home province.

Malema has hinted that more EFF leaders could leave if they donā€™t get top positions at the conference next month.

He even suggested that EFF Member of Parliament Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi and his wife supported Shivambuā€™s choice to join MK.

Ndlozi is being promoted by EFF youth groups as a possible future deputy president.
