Actress Fatima Abdool has been sworn in as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg.

The actress from Eersterust in Tshwane is well-known for roles in TV shows like Binnelanders, Scandal, Song vir Katryn and Sewende laan.

Abdool, who is the Deputy President of the United Independent Movement (UIM), is also known for her activism in Eersterust where she runs free community programmes for children.

The 53-year-old, who is now a resident of Johannesburg, said she loved acting but community work has always been her passion.

“I’m involved in helping victims of abuse even if it’s only to listen or to offer support at the police station. I get lots of clothes as an actor and offer the clothes to the police for victims of GBV,” she said.

Last year Abdool got a lot of praise when she revealed on Facebook her struggles with her addict son.

“After 13 years of being a slave to drugs, he is finally on his way to recovery. My son is safe and sound in a rehabilitation centre and he is doing well,” she said.

She said she also thinks it is time that women are recognised for their strength and that they are trusted with the growth of this country.

“My party recognises that so they didn’t think twice when they appointed me. The people who are running the country have lost touch with our struggles. I find myself in a place where I have to stand up and make a difference,” she said.

Abdool said she will use her creative skills to help communities.

“In the past few months the plight of our youth and children has become worse,” she said.
