ActionSA’s Abel Tau is out in the cold

ActionSA has stripped its suspended MMC of Human Settlement in Tshwane Abel Tau of his membership over sexual assault allegations.

The decision was taken on Tuesday night during the party’s Senate meeting to determine his future.

On Monday morning, ahead of his hearing date, Tau strolled into his office at the Tshwane House boasting to some of his former colleagues that he will be back in his office on 11 November after the hearing.

He threatened that those who worked to bring him down will pay for their action and was quoted saying, “die poppe sal dans” which means there will be trouble.

The suspended MMC allegedly attempted to rape his friend’s wife at Tau’s home in Tshwane in September after a drinking spree. The matter was reported at Akasia Police Station, Tshwane on 16 September.

Other women, who claimed to have suffered sexual assault at Tau’s hands, were reportedly willing to testify against him in court.

In a statement from the party they said during the sitting, they heard evidence from a number of witnesses.

“We determined that the charges relating to the matter would be better dealt with through the courts,” said the statement.

“The Senate looked at Tau’s conduct and concluded that it was inconsistent with ActionSA’s values of ethical leadership.”

It said the positions of authority and power in the party are entrusted responsibilities to leaders that can never be accused of sexual advances or the subjugation of women and the conduct has brought Action SA into disrepute.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said police are investigating a case of sexual assault.

“The suspect is expected to appear before the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court in March and police investigations are still underway,” he added.
