AbaThembu King wants same deal as Zulu King

  • King Dalindyebo wants the government to give him funds since they give money to the Zulu King, saying he currently uses his own salary to help his people.
  • The King wants a senior official fired for trying to break away from his kingdom while working for traditional affairs.

King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo says he is angry that the Eastern Cape government won’t give him money to help his people, while the Zulu King gets funding for that purpose.

The AbaThembu King spoke out during a visit by Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa at the Bumbano Great Palace in Mthatha at the weekend.

“I’m embarrassed that the provincial government has not done anything to assist me financially to uplift my community. Whatever I do for my people comes from my salary. This is frustrating,” the King said.

During the meeting, King Dalindyebo also demanded that Cogta’s deputy director-general, Thandabantu Gwebindlala, be fired.

He said Gwebindlala has been trying to break away from the AbaThembu kingdom through court cases while working for the government department that deals with traditional affairs.

“The DDG is conflicted and must be dismissed from the position as he is dealing with the institution,” said the King, calling Gwebindlala’s conduct “abusive advantage as a deployee of government.”

The King also criticised the Cogta MEC, saying he had ignored royal matters and only showed up because the minister was visiting.

Hlabisa promised to look into the King’s concerns, including his request for funding.
