Kenneth Kaunda, who passed away last week aged 97, will be buried on 7 July.
Kaunda was the last of a generation of leaders who brought independence to Africa, becoming Zambia’s first inaugural president in 1964.
KK, as he was affectionately known, “shall be put to rest at a very private ceremony for family and selected invited mourners,” Zambian Vice President Inonge Wina said on state television on Monday.
He will be buried at the country’s presidential burial site situated opposite the cabinet office in Lusaka.
On 2 July, three days before the funeral a state memorial will be held at the city’s 60,000-seat National Heroes Stadium.
Because of Covid-19 regulations, foreign leaders in attendance may be accompanied by only one official, Wina said.
In the days leading up to his funeral, Kaunda’s remains will be transported to the country’s 10 provinces to allow people to pay their final respects to the statesman.
