It was supposed to be an eight kilometre ride but it turned into a horror experience she will never forget.
When she took a taxi from Khayelitsha to Harare in Cape Town to visit her boyfriend on Sunday, the driver attempted to rape her. When she fought him off, he dropped her in the middle of nowhere, but that wasn’t the end of her ordeal.
When she tried to open a case the police said there was no case to report.
Speaking to Scrolla.Africa, the 36-year-old woman who can’t be named as she is a victim of attempted rape said she took a taxi from Khayelitsha Site C.
“The driver dropped off passengers until I was the last one left in the taxi,” she said. “Then the driver took a different route. I asked him why and he said it was a shortcut.” She said she had a bad feeling.
“But I told myself that maybe I am being paranoid,” she said.
She said the taxi eventually stopped far away from the township and drove into the bushes where the driver stopped and asked her to sleep with him.
“He tried to force himself on me but I screamed as loud as I could and he ordered me to get out of his taxi. He said he hoped I met other men who will rape me without negotiating like he did. He then drove off, leaving me in the middle of nowhere,” she said.
The woman walked more than five kilometers to the police to report the case but the police officer who was supposed to help her asked why she even bothered coming to the station because she was not raped.
“I was shocked to hear a police officer talking like that. I ended up going home without getting help,” she added.
Harare SAPS spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi said the lady needed to visit the station commander to complain about the police officer who failed to assist her because it was her right to get help.
