A Soweto derby in Durban on cup final day!

By Razeen Gutta

The Nedbank Cup final has been set; and it will be Kaizer Chiefs up against Orlando Pirates for the silverware at Moses Mabhida Stadium come 10 May.

Following two cracking semi-final ties on Sunday, the stage is now set for the Soweto giants to do battle in the cup final of the competition for the first time in almost two decades.

First, Pirates picked up a 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants thanks to a goal from Kabelo Dlamini. In the late game at Loftus, Chiefs came back from behind to put Mamelodi Sundowns away by two goals to one.

The results mean that the Sowetan sides will now meet in the domestic final for the first time since 2006, when Amakhosi came out victors on penalties.

This time around, however, the Buccaneers are eyeing a hatrick of Nedbank Cup triumphs whereas Nasreddine Nabi’s side will hope to conclude a difficult season by bringing an end to their decade long trophy drought.

The much anticipated venue announcement has also been made, with Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium set to host the showpiece event for the first time in six years.
