A-Reece, one of Mzansi’s most critically acclaimed rappers, has declared himself the best rapper, not just in South Africa, but on the entire continent.
“I’M THE BEST RAPPER IN AFRICA,” tweeted the Pretoria-born artist on Wednesday.
With the post, the rapper – whose real name is Lehlogonolo Mataboge – caused a stir in the hip-hop community, especially among the fans of Nasty C.
”Did Nasty C leave the continent again?” asked one Twitter user.
“Why is Nasty C tweeting from A-Reece’s account?” joked another.
The two rappers have long been compared and pitted against one another by fans of the genre. They were both born in 1997 and rose to prominence in the commercial music scene at the same time.
They both released their debut studio albums just a few weeks apart in 2016, with Nasty C’s Bad Hair dropping in September before A-Reece’s Paradise was released under Ambitiouz Entertainment.
A-Reece later separated from the label over conflicts over money and is now independent. Nasty C is signed under Def Jam.
It was only natural for people to start comparing the two artists.
Nasty C is certainly more commercially successful than A-Reece. He has three number one iTunes-charting studio albums, while A-Reece has only released two solo albums to date.
However, many think that the quality of A-Reece’s musical output is more consistent than Nasty C’s.
Nasty C is currently touring the country with American rapper Domani Harris, son of southern hip-hop legend T.I.. The Ivyson Army Tour started in Bloemfontein on 6 May and will be heading to Durban on Saturday 14 May.
