Australia and South Africa kicked off their three-match test series with an exciting day one at The Gabba, with the hosts capitalising from the start.
Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl first, with the green surface working for the Australian bowlers.
Mitchell Starc got Proteas captain Dean Elgar out early, before the pacer also dismissed Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj later on in the morning.
Scott Boland picked up Sarel Erwee and Khaya Zondo, before Cummins got two wickets himself, preventing the visiting batters from getting comfortable.
Kyle Verreynne got past the 50 mark for the South Africans, but he too was dismissed once Nathan Lyon got into his stride.
The right armer also picked up Marco Jansen and Ainrich Nortje as the Proteas were cleaned up for just 152.
Kagiso Rabada came out fighting with the ball, dismissing David Warner off the first ball of the innings.
Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja also departed early, with the visitors looking comfortable until the arrival of Travis Head to the crease.
Steve Smith got to 36 before being bowled by Nortje, however Head got the hosts closer to the score by batting through the day. Australia finished on 145/5 and trail by just seven runs.
