Attempts by #FreeJacobZuma protesters to block Umngeni Road in Durban with burning tyres were soon shut down when police and community policing forums acted swiftly in the early hours of Monday morning.
The flames were doused, the obstacles removed and the protesters dispersed before the morning peak traffic started.
In Isipingo near Umlazi, a supermarket owned by a foreign national was set alight but residents jumped in and aided the owner to put out the fire.
No one was injured, and a case of arson was opened. The provincial police said no one has been arrested.
The police and the army remain on high alert as the threats of violence by people who claim to support former President Jacob Zuma continue to circulate on social media.
The law-enforcement authorities appear to be better prepared compared to last month when they were slow to react during the week-long looting that claimed the lives of more than 350 people.
Many businesses were crippled and some are still trying to get going again.
There were no disruptions reported in Gauteng.
The threats of fresh violence come as the National Assembly will have sittings on Tuesday and Wednesday to look into the reports of the unrest that gripped KZN and Gauteng last month.
The #FreeJacobZuma movement wants Zuma to be released from jail as he serves a 15-month sentence for defying two court orders telling him to appear at the state capture commission of inquiry.
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said the law enforcement authorities are monitoring the situation closely.
National police commissioner Khehla Sitole said they were ready for would-be #FreeJacobZuma protesters.
Meanwhile, Bonginkosi Khanyile, the Fees Must Fall activist, appeared in the Durban Magistrate Court on Monday on charges of inciting violence and looting last month.
His matter was postponed to Thursday for a formal bail hearing.
