  • Walter Sisulu University says Sisonke Mbolekwa was not a registered student, but others have shared proof online showing otherwise.

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is being accused of deregistering a student who was shot and killed on campus, despite proof that he was actively attending classes and submitting work.

Sisonke Mbolekwa, a third-year Bachelor of Education student, was gunned down on Tuesday morning. The alleged shooter is a residence manager at the university.

WSU claims Mbolekwa was not a registered student in 2025.

โ€œIn our database, the name we have received and the details of the alleged person who has died is not a student,โ€ said special programmes director Ndiyakholwa Ngqulu in an interview with Newzroom Afrika.

But fellow students say otherwise, and theyโ€™ve taken to social media with screenshots showing Mbolekwa registered on 12 March this year.

SRC president Balungile Madikizela said they had also obtained test and assignment submissions proving he had been actively participating since the start of the academic year.

Mbolekwaโ€™s devastated family said they wonโ€™t rest until justice is served. They also disputed the universityโ€™s claim that he was not a registered student.

On Wednesday, the family visited the morgue to identify his body before heading to the scene where he died. They were accompanied by EFF Central Command member Ncedo Kolanisi, who is also acting as the family spokesperson.

Describing WSU as a war zone, Kolanisi said: โ€œItโ€™s still like a movie, itโ€™s like a dream that someone has to wake them up from.โ€

Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that no arrests have been made and that a preliminary investigation is underway.
