Instead of taking a taxi, Vuyokazi Madliwa decided to hitchhike to her workplace on 17 May – and she has not been seen since.

Taxis in East London take a long time to fill up on Mondays, so Vuyokazi hitchhiked to her workplace in Komani, formerly Queenstown.

Not only has she disappeared, all her social media accounts have since been deactivated, and her phone is off.

According to her worried family, she has not come home and she has not been seen at the Department of Justice, where she works as a switchboard operator.

Her younger sister, Sesona Madliwa, said that Vuyokazi had been on leave and had spent time with her family in East London before she left to go back to work on Monday.

She also said that she doesn’t know what her sister was wearing on the day she went missing.

“We became worried on Monday evening when she didn’t call to tell us that she had arrived safely. On Tuesday, we called her employer and we were told she didn’t report for work,” Sesona said.

Her picture has been circulating on social media since she went missing, but, so far, it has not produced any results.

The family is appealing for anyone who may have seen her to go to the police.

Police spokesperson Haz Mqala confirmed that a missing person’s enquiry has been reported to the police.

Police requested anyone with information to please contact Captain Van Der Wald on 043-707-0600.
