The threat was clear: a pretty box addressed to Buhle Skhosana, beautifully wrapped and decorated – but with bullets inside the box and a note threatening her with death.
But two days later, Buhle’s mother was shot dead. The family believes the bullets meant for Buhle had found her mother, Johanna.
The box, and the dangerous threat, delivered last Friday, came from Buhle’s ex-boyfriend.
On Sunday evening while the family was enjoying supper and watching their favourite TV programmes, hitmen arrived at the door. Shots were fired and Johanna was shot dead, killed in her living room.
Buhle said she has been living in fear ever since she dumped the lover a month ago.
“He would come to my work place and complain about the male colleagues I am friends with,” she said.
“Two weeks ago he hacked my phone and would listen to my calls, read my WhatsApp messages. He would question me about them and assault me.”
She believes her boyfriend thought she was already at home from work at the time of the shooting.
The former lovers allegedly had an argument during the day and she threatened to take the bullets to the police.
“I missed the shooting by just a few minutes,” she said.
Buhle’s brother Sphiwe said when there was a knock at the door on Sunday evening his mother went to open the door.
“The person who was outside pushed it open and started shooting. I ran to protect my two young nephews,” he said.
Tsakani police spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu said they are investigating a case of murder.
“No one has been arrested yet, we are calling on anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to contact the Tsakani Police,” she said.
