Sibusiso Magaqa featured for Royal AM on Saturday despite receiving the news that his father was allegedly shot dead just a few hours earlier.
When the young midfielder alerted his technical team before their GladAfrica Championship match against TS Sporting in Durban on Saturday, they told him to excuse himself.
But Magaqa pleaded to be featured nonetheless.
And on the pitch he played well. Royal AM won the match 2-1 and he was named man of the match.
Magaqa told Scrolla.Africa when he learnt of his father’s shooting he felt he needed to take to the field and play for him.
“I’m glad I managed to help the team win. This win has increased our chances of securing promotion with four matches to go.”
Magaqa said he will never forget the love and guidance his father gave him and his family.
“He was supportive of my career. He was instrumental when I signed my professional contract with AmaZulu four seasons ago.”
Royal AM coach Sazi Hadebe said what Magaqa did was unbelievable.
“We asked him to excuse himself but he insisted he wanted to contribute for the team. We will support him throughout the week as his family prepares to bury their loved one,” said the manager.
Royal AM, which is owned by businesswoman Shawn Mkhize, currently occupies the top spot on the log with 47 points from 27 matches with three matches to play.
