Rising star Naledi Aphiwe narrowly escaped serious harm when angry Maskandi fans hurled bottles at her during the Mthandeni Maskandi Summer Experience in Nhlwathi village, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Sunday.
The trouble began when the event’s stage manager replaced Maskandi artist Gatsheni Ndlovu with Naledi. Fans, still fired up from Gatsheni’s performance, turned on the 22-year-old singer from Inanda, Durban, pelting her with empty Savanna bottles. Even Gatsheni’s backup singers had to flee the stage.
A cameraman intervened, shielding Naledi and helping her escape as the chaos escalated.
Many of the angry fans were women who accused Naledi of openly supporting Mthandeni Manqele’s rival, Khuzani Mpungose. Some said she had backed Khuzani’s music just last month.
Naledi, who lost her mother in 2022, became famous when American superstar Chris Brown discovered her on Instagram last year. He featured her vocals on his song Shooter and paid her R56,000. Her fame soared further when she met Chris Brown in Johannesburg during his recent tour.
