A police officer was injured, and a suspect was detained after a shootout erupted between police and suspects in Gqeberha’s Motherwell township on Saturday night.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg reported that officers were conducting crime prevention patrols on Mtwendwe Street in Motherwell NU7 when they were suddenly approached by four suspects who opened fire.
“[Police] retaliated and the suspects started to flee in different directions. During the incident, one suspect was arrested, and a 9mm firearm was seized,” Janse Van Rensburg said.
The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the lower body but was later discharged from the hospital.
The 34-year-old suspect is now in custody, facing charges of attempted murder, pointing a firearm, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Motherwell magistrate court later this week.
