On Saturday, 26 October, it will be 10 years since Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa was gunned down. Even though he was gunned down in a room in front of witnesses, his killers have still not been brought to justice.
The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper’s last game was a brilliant 4-1 win over Ajax Cape Town in the rain.
After the match, he shared what would be a final moment with super-fan Mama Joy Chauke.
“He hugged me and said, ‘This is my mom, I love you’,” Mama Joy remembered.
“He came back three times as if he was telling me goodbye, you won’t see me again.”
Just 24 hours later, on 26 October 2014, Meyiwa was shot dead at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus. People there said two intruders killed him.
It took six years for police to make any arrests. Five people are now on trial, but all say they’re innocent. The state believes Khumalo planned the murder.
The trial, which started in 2020, keeps getting delayed. The latest delay came after a lawyer got sick. It starts again on Monday, 28 October.
Sinqobile Maphisa, whose brother is one of the accused, says he’s innocent and thinks someone is hiding the truth.
That rainy match, during which Meyiwa won his last Man-of-the-Match Award, is now a sad memory for fans – it was his final great game before his life was tragically cut short.
